When Should You Book Your Wedding DJ?

One of the most common questions we hear from newly engaged couples is: How far in advance do I need to book?

The honest answer: sooner than you think.

New England has a beautiful but compressed wedding season. Late May through October is peak time — and that means the best venues, photographers, caterers, and DJs are all competing for the same calendar slots.

For popular Saturday dates in summer and fall, 12 to 16 months in advance is not unusual. We regularly turn away couples who reach out 6 months before their date because we are already fully booked.

If your wedding is on a Friday or Sunday, or during the off-season (November through April), you have a bit more flexibility. But even then, waiting until 6 months out is cutting it close if you have a specific DJ in mind.

Here is how we recommend thinking about your vendor booking order:

As soon as you get engaged (12–18 months out):

• Set your date and book your venue
• Start researching photographers and DJs — these are the vendors that book earliest

12–16 months out:

• Book your DJ and photographer
• These two vendors are often the first to fill up for peak dates

9–12 months out:

• Book your caterer, florist, and officiant
• Start planning your ceremony music and reception timeline with your DJ

6 months out:

• Begin detailed planning with your DJ through the online portal
• Submit your must-play and do-not-play lists
• Finalize your ceremony song selections

1–2 months out:

• Final timeline review with your DJ
• Confirm all vendor contact information
• Share your timeline with your venue coordinator

1–2 weeks out:

• Final check-in call with your DJ
• Confirm load-in time and parking at the venue
• Share any last-minute song requests or changes

Unlike some vendors, a DJ can only be in one place at a time. We do not have a team of 20 photographers who can cover multiple weddings on the same day. Each DJ on our roster has one date available per day — and once it is gone, it is gone.

When you book early, you also get more time to work with your DJ on the details. The couples who have the best experience are the ones who start planning 6 to 9 months out, not 6 weeks out.

We hear from couples every season who found their dream DJ — only to discover that DJ is already booked for their date. At that point, you are either settling for someone else or scrambling to find availability.

The vendors who are still available 3 months before a peak Saturday are available for a reason. That is not always the case — sometimes great vendors have last-minute openings due to cancellations — but it is a risk worth thinking about.

2. Check availability — We confirm your date is open
3. Review your package options — We walk you through what is included
4. Sign and deposit — A signed contract and deposit secures your date
5. Planning portal access — You get access to our online planning system to start building your timeline and song list

The deposit is what locks in your date. Until that is in place, the date remains open to other couples.
